Growing up in The Bahamas, Strachan spent his youth looking into the night sky, which sparked his propensity for exploration. He has embarked on expeditions to the Arctic, harvested a 4.5-ton block of ice and shipped it to his elementary school for exhibition, trained as a cosmonaut, established the Bahamas Aerospace and Sea Exploration Center (B.A.S.E.C.) — an art studio and a laboratory for scientific research — and launched an artwork into space in tribute to one of his personal heroes, Robert Henry Lawrence, Jr., the first African American astronaut selected for any national space program.

Over the past decade, Strachan has been building Encyclopedia of Invisibility, an A-to-Z compendium of some 17,000 entries describing legacies of the under-recognized and unfamiliar – people, places, events, objects, concepts, and phenomena – based on the layout and logic of Encyclopaedia Britannica, traditionally regarded as a primary source of world literacy in the pre-Internet age. This ongoing project is a wellspring of stories overshadowed through history which Strachan brings to the fore through various bodies of mixed media work.

Strachan's presentation at Frieze Seoul highlights work from three principal series, and a rare edition of Encyclopedia of Invisibility.

Invisibles, referring to subjects drawn from Encyclopedia of Invisibility. Works in this series are in dialogue with the history of picture making and storytelling, shining light on the subjects’ hidden historical stories.

Galaxy, Strachan’s recent series based on the notion of stargazing, re-imagines the experience of looking into the stars and becoming the author of what is there through the act of viewing.

Galaxy Mandala, a new body of circular works drawing on symbolic elements of the mandala as a representation of the universe and reflections on life and existence.

Galaxy Mandala

“It is not possible to have an artistic practice without deeply considering exploration. I was born in The Bahamas on a tiny island, so exploration was a way for me to learn more about who I was.

My work questions the nature of our relationship to the truth. It is really hard to be human without having a relationship to storytelling. Storytelling has been central to every significant movement spanning the history of art. Culture is formed as a result of storytelling, which encompasses all the things that we try to hold onto and share with the next generation. So, what happens when historical narratives are false? What do we do with that?”

Tavares STRACHAN

Born in 1979 in Nassau, Bahamas
Lives and works between New York, USA and Nassau, Bahamas

Themes of invisibility, displacement, and loss are elemental to Tavares Strachan’s investigations, which question canonized bodies of histories and unsettle the conditions by which some are legitimized and others obscured. Using the rubric of received knowledge to make networks and structures of power more visible, his work brings to light forgotten or little-known historical epics and human achievements. Aeronautical exploration, expeditions to desolate locations and extreme environments, and allegories of the human aspiration to surmount mortal limitations and adverse circumstances, are some of his settings for telling the history of the invisible.

Born in 1979 in Nassau, The Bahamas, Tavares Strachan holds a BFA in Glass (2003) from Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA in Sculpture (2006) from Yale University. He divides his time between New York, where his studio is based, and Nassau, where he has established OKU, a not-for-profit community project encompassing an artist residency and exhibition spaces, a scholarship scheme, and after-school creative programs.

Strachan was a Getty Research Institute artist-in-residence scholar (2019–2020), the Allen Institute’s inaugural artist-in-residence (2018), and a MIT artist-in-residence (2009–2010). He is a recipient of the LACMA Art + Technology Lab Grant (2014). In 2018, he was awarded the Frontier Art Prize.

He has been commissioned to create monumental site-responsive works of public art for institutions and outdoor sites across the United States including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Barclays Center in New York, Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Coachella Valley in California, and the Mississippi River.

His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions including Polar Eclipse, The 1st Bahamas National Pavilion in The 55th Venice Biennale (2013), Italy; You Can Do Whatever You Like (The Orthostatic Tolerance Project) (2009) at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Orthostatic Tolerance: It Might Not Be Such a Bad Idea if I Never Went Home Again (2010) at the MIT List Visual Art Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA; and Always, Sometimes, Never (2018) at Frye Art Museum in Seattle, USA.

His work has been featured in institutional group exhibitions including Meanwhile... Suddenly, And Then, The 12th Lyon Biennale (2013) in France; May You Live in Interesting Times, The 58th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition (2019) in Italy; Soft Power: A Conversation for the Future (2019) at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, USA; The Willfulness of Objects (2020) at The Bass, Miami, USA; Feeling the Stones, The 1st Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale (2021) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and Flesh and Bones: The Art of Anatomy (2022) at Getty Center, Los Angeles, USA.

Baltimore Museum of Art, Barclays Center, Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh,

Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia에서 <You Can Do Whatever You Like (The Orthostatic Tolerance Project)>, 2010년 MIT List Visual Art Center in Cambridge에서 <Orthostatic Tolerance: It Might Not Be Such a Bad Idea if I Never Went Home Again>, 2018 년 Frye Art Museum에서 <Always, Sometimes, Never>라는 주제로 전시한 바 있다.

Lyon Biennale <Meanwhile ... Suddenly, And Then>을 비롯하여 2019년 제58회 Venice Biennale <May You Live in Interesting Times>, 같은 해 San Francisco Museum of Modern Art 에서 열린 <Soft Power: A Conversation for the Future>, 2020년 The Bass에서 <The Willfulness of Objects>, 2021년 사우디아라비아 리야드에서 열린 제1회 Diriyah Contemporary Art에서 <Feeling the Stones>, 그리고 올해 LA Getty Center의 <Flesh and Bones: The Art of Anatomy> 등 주요 기관에서 주최하는 그룹전에 참여했다.
