Perrotin is thrilled to return to Art Basel Hong Kong 2024 with a curated showcase of works by renowned artists from its roster, along with artists collaborating with the gallery for the first time. Central to the booth is a diptych painting by Takashi Murakami, from his renowned series Homage to Francis Bacon, the work once again focuses on tortured figures, where moving flesh reveals the scars and agonies of the soul of the human being. The dense compositions contain the recurring motifs of the artist’s iconography—eyes, mushrooms, characters—accentuated by multiple layers of color on the platinum leaf. With this series started in 2002, the artist pursues his homage to Francis Bacon, who has significantly influenced his work.

The Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF will present a series of new works at the booth as a sneak peak of its upcoming solo exhibition at Perrotin Los Angeles in April 2024. Conceived in 2019, MSCHF is a conceptual collective whose elaborate interventions expose and leverage the absurdity of our cultural, political, and monetary systems. Its immersive exhibition “Nothing is Sacred” is on view at Daelim Museum in Seoul until 28 April. After a takeover of the entire ISETAN THE SPACE in Tokyo, the Californian art stalwart Barry McGee will show his latest painting at the booth. Drawing inspiration from his graffiti roots and counterculture of the urban street life, McGee’s creations bring forth characters from the streets, coupled with the values and colorful, hallucinatory aesthetics cultivated during his formative years.

Major highlights of the booth will also include Lee Bae and JR. Lee’s minimalist yet iconic Brushstroke series will grace the walls of the gallery booth. The organic mesmerising splashes of black ink on paper enchants viewers to delve into the artist’s charcoal-infused world. While Lee Bae is set to unveil “La Maison de la Lune Brûlée,” a solo presentation on the occasion of the 2024 Official Collateral Event of the 60th La Biennale di Venezia, JR will open his solo exhibition in Perrotin Paris ahead of the Olympic Summer Games this year, capturing the soul of the city Paris with a unique regard toward its splendid landscape and the daily lives of its citizens. In Ballerina in containers, on the verge, Le Havre, France (2021), which will be on view at the booth, JR confronts the delicate movement of a ballerina against the hard, industrial backdrop of the container, to highlight two seemingly opposite worlds: the precision of movements in dance versus the automation and repetition of the shipping industry.

Following her well-received recent exhibition at Perrotin Paris last year, the Chinese artist Chen Ke will present a new painting from the series Bauhaus Gal. Based on the zeitgeist-charged archive photos of the Bauhaus, Chen Ke prefers the classical conventions when delineating the faces of these pioneering young women of modern times.

In addition, the presentation at the booth will showcase artists newly introduced to the gallery program, including Jason Boyd Kinsella, Chang Yachin, Fu Rao, Kara Joslyn, Sang Nam Lee, Jin Meyerson, Sigrid Sandström, Marty Schnapf, Yu-Xin Su, Aryo Toh Djojo and Xie Qi.

The booth will also exhibit a selection of artworks by Jean-Marie Appriou, Kelly Beeman, Jean-Philippe Delhomme, Mathilde Denize, Jens Fänge, Bernard Frize, Laurent Grasso, Hans Hartung, Thilo Heinzmann, Gregor Hildebrandt, Susumu Kamijo, Klara Kristalova, Emi Kuraya, George Mathieu, Mr., ob, Otani Workshop, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Park Seo-Bo, Christiane Pooley, Qi Zhuo, Matthew Ronay, Shim Moon-Seup, Josh Sperling, Tavares Strachan and AYA TAKANO.

Concurrent with the solo show of Izumi Kato at Perrotin Hong Kong gallery, the Japanese artist will present two sculptures featuring hybrid creatures from his singular artistic universe. His solo show will be on view from 24 March to 18 May 2024.
