Perrotin is pleased to participate in Frieze Los Angeles 2024 with a solo presentation by Gregor Hildebrandt.

Working from pre-recorded audio and video materials, Hildebrandt’s practice materializes music and cinema to archive our collective cultural consciousness. Reimagining analog media through digital imagery, collage, sculpture, and painting, the artist imbues a sense of nostalgia throughout – from portraits of pop-culture icons printed onto the spines of cassettes, to towering columns of contorted vinyl records.

Hildebrandt's new body of work pays homage to the film "All about my Mother" (Todo sobre mi madre, 1999) by renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar. The movie centers around Manuela, a nurse who oversees donor organ transplants and a single mother to her son Esteban. Esteban dies tragically in a car accident when chasing the character Blanche DuBois for an autograph, and afterwards, Manuela resigns and travels the world, forming bonds with a number of women along the way.

At Perrotin's booth, Hildebrandt will debut a series of new cassette shelf works, paying homage to the strong female characters from Almodóvar’s movie. This new body of work utilizes mise-en-abîme to echo Almodóvar’s web of filmic and theatrical references. Also on view, Hildebrandt presents his signature “ripoff” paintings, whereby he uses the magnetic coating of video tape strands to create dual canvases with positive and negative patterns. At Frieze, he uses VHS tape pre-recorded with "All about my mother" as well as cassette tape pre-recorded with the movie’s soundtrack. In another imaginative use of material, Hildebrandt's most recent series of photo reflections depicts vases settings inspired by the film on dark, glossy VHS tape, referencing classical still life painting with haunting effect. Finally, Hildebrandt accentuates the space with two vinyl records columns and wallpaper made from VHS tape coating as a backdrop for the booth, featuring designs that reference Manuela's apartment in Barcelona. Altogether, Hildebrandt creates an immersive experience that allows viewers to enter into the atmosphere of "All about my Mother."

Our booth will highlight artists with solo exhibitions at the gallery in the United States this Spring. GaHee Park presents a new painting, concurrent to her exhibition at Perrotin New York on view through April 6, while MSCHF opens an exhibition at Perrotin Los Angeles this April. Additionally, Takashi Murakami’s large-scale painting Stuff the Universe in a Calabash is on view concurrent to exhibitions at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art and a collaborative presentation with Perrotin and Nahmad Contemporary in Gstaad. The booth will also have a work of Alain Jacquet to announce an upcoming show bringing to light the friendship and artistic dialogue between French artist Alain Jacquet and American artist James Rosenquist. Spanning from their initial encounter in the early days of Pop Art in New York City in the 1960s to the surprising connections in their later innovative developments in the period from 1980 to 2010, the exhibition will focus on their shared interest in the cosmos and outer space. The show will open in October 2024 in New York, in collaboration with Kasmin Gallery and the James Rosenquist Estate.

Finally, Perrotin will showcase work by Daniel Arsham, Genesis Belanger, Chang Yachin, Jean-Philippe Delhomme, Henry Gunderson, Alain Jacquet, Kara Joslyn, Jin Meyerson, Danielle Orchard, Paola Pivi, Yu-Xin Su, and Xiyao Wang.
