Perrotin Samcheong is pleased to present Miniature Garden, a solo exhibition of the Japanese artist ob on view from October 6 through November 19, 2022. Comprising 15 drawings on paper and 10 works on canvas, Miniature Garden explores the complex structure of emotion and leads to the personal world like a garden.
페로탕 삼청은 10월 6일부터 11월 19일까지 일본 작가 ob의 개인전 《 Miniature Garden 》을 선보입니다. 드로잉 15점과 캔버스 회화 10점으로 구성된 이번 전시는 인간 내면의 복합적인 감정 구조를 탐구함과 동시에 정원으로 은유되는 사적 세계로 여러분을 초대합니다.
The characters, which frequent the paintings of ob are having inaudible talks, collecting things, or lolling against the table or back on the bed, as part of the landscapes dimly painted in pastel tones.
작품 속 캐릭터들은 파스텔 톤으로 흐릿하게 채색된 풍경의 일부로서, 서로 들리지 않는 사담을 나누거나, 무언가를 채집하거나, 어딘가에 늘어져 있습니다.
Surrounded by plants, animals, and trinkets scattered around, in the form of paper crafts, photographs, and more, their existence kept from being nullified by their silent, almost emotionally distant relationships with the objects around them—a collection of miniatures, a table against which they rest, a bed on which they recline.
식물과 동물, 그리고 주변에 흐트러져 있는 종이 공예나 사진 등과 같이 자그마한 물건들에 둘러 쌓여 있는 작품 속 인물들은 고요함 속에 머물러 있습니다. 미니어처 컬렉션, 쉴 수 있는 테이블, 기대어 누울 수 있는 침대와 같은 주변의 사물로부터 정서적으로 단절되어 있는 것처럼 보입니다.
'Garden' in this exhibition is conceptual. I began to think that the act of creating a personal world away from everyday life could itself be like a garden. I hold a feeling that I want individual stories to be valued, no matter what the social circumstances are.
이번 전시에서의 '정원'은 개념적이다. 일상으로부터 벗어나 개인적 세계를 만드는 행위 자체가 정원과도 같다는 생각이 들었다. 사회적 환경과는 상관 없이 개인의 사적인 이야기들이 그 가치를 인정받았으면 한다.
What the act of tending the ‘garden’ signifies is the construction of a new origin for the individuals in the works. Inspired by classic children’s literature such as ‘Tom’s Midnight Garden’ by Philippa Pearce and ‘The Secret Garden’ by Francis Hodgson Burnett, ob explores the narrative of growth through solitary cultivation.
작품 속 인물이 ‘정원’을 가꾸는 행위는 새로운 정체성을 형성하는 과정과도 같습니다. 필랍파 피어스의 ‘Tom’s Midnight Garden’이나 프랜시스 호지슨 버넷의 ‘The Secret Garden’과 같은 고전 아동 문학으로부터 영감을 받은 ob는 고독한 경작을 통한 성장의 서사를 탐구합니다.
That is, the ‘garden’ functions as a sort of conceptual category to accommodate such a stagnant time and the interactions there with others are the growth of a person’s mind through the enclosure of a garden within these artworks.
‘정원’은 그렇게 정체된 시간을 포괄하기 위한 일종의 개념적 범주로 기능하며, 작품 속 정원의 울타리 안에서 발생하는 타인과의 상호작용을 통해 개인들은 정서적 성장을 이룹니다.

Born in 1992, ob is the most important of the many artists who emerged as part of Japan’s SNS generation in 2010. As a university student in Kyoto, she organized and curated several local exhibitions after reaching out to other artists her age through the illustration communication service pixiv. This culminated in the exhibition “wassyoi” for which she received much attention and acclaim. The name “wassyoi” itself stems from the chant used by revelers in Japanese street festivals. As part of the new generation of artists who grew up in an environment where video games and social media have always been part of daily life, she explores the dreamy filter of the feminine psyche through the recurring motif of a wide-eyed young girl in her delicate, atmospheric paintings. ob has been featured numerous times in art fairs overseas.

1992년생 ob는 2010년 일본 SNS 세대와 함께 부상한 여러 작가 중 가장 중요한 인물이다. 교토의 한 대학에 재학 중이던 그녀는 일러스트 커뮤니케이션서비스인 pixiv를 통해 또래의 다른 작가들과 연락을 취한 후 몇 차례 전시를기획하고 진행했다. ob의 이런 시도는 많은 주목과 찬사를 받은 《wassyoi》라는 전시에서 정점에 다다랐는데, 전시명 《wassyoi》는 일본에서 길거리페스티벌이 열리면 흥겨운 취객들이 외치는 구호에서 비롯되었다. 비디오 게임과소셜 미디어가 일상인 환경에서 성장한 신세대 작가 ob는 섬세하고 신비로운분위기를 띤 작품에 반복적으로 등장하는 큰눈의 소녀를 통해 여성 정신세계의몽환적 필터를 탐구한다. ob는 다수의 해외 아트 페어에 참여했다.
