BOOTH S01

For its new participation to Asia Now, Perrotin is delighted to present a duo booth by Korean artist Shim Moon-Seup and CHANG Ya Chin.

Shim Moon-Seup, the pioneer of modern sculpture in Korea, utilizes ‘nature’ and ‘temporality’ as the core element of his works and continuously strives to pursue the quest for how to perceive and express his themes with the infinite possibilities of arts beyond the standardized genres and media.

“In addition to using a variety of materials, Shim Moon-Seup has also produced numerous two-dimensional works. For Shim Moon-Seup, these oil paintings are not fundamentally different from his sculptures. The combination of large-format works, in which viewers can immerse themselves, and simple compositions based on identical, repetitive gestures suggests the existence of a space beyond the canvas. In line with calligraphy Shim Moon-Seup studied in his youth, the brushstrokes and the exact repetition of movements express the artist’s individuality - his spirit (Gi in Korean).” Extract from Mael Bellec text.

Based between her hometown of Hong Kong, New York City, and Austin, Texas, CHANG Ya Chin draws inspiration from everyday objects, daily rhythms, and the blend of cultures around her.

For Asia Now, she presents a body of work that explores how we balance our own needs against those of others, and how these interactions ultimately shape our identity. Through unexpected scenarios and characters, CHANG depicts recognizable moments of decision—whether the Ferrero figure should sail alone to face the storm, or whether a solitary mahjong tile can integrate into the tightly-knit group above. In other paintings, she builds further layers of social complexity, examining the rituals of self-care or the inescapable roles we inherit.
